The driver closest to the chicken uses the brake to slow down, then the next driver brakes a little harder to avoid a crash, then the next driver brakes even harder and so on, until one of the cars comes to a complete stop.

This creates a ‘phantom intersection’ even though the chicken has finished crossing already.
